take a sip of inspirationApparently, April 25 is World Penguin Day. And wouldn’t you know, I have a mug rug in my collection to celebrate it.

I’ve heard of people using coloring books to inspire their appliqué, but when I looked for a penguin pattern to share with you I ran across a scrapbooking site. (The site calls it a “paper-piecing” pattern, but it’s clearly better suited for appliqué in quilting.)

Mug Rug Penguin
This mug rug was made by Laurell Griffith.

I found tons of fabulous other penguin quilt ideas, but my two favorites are both foundation paper-pieced and can be found on Craftsy. Unicorn Harts has a free pattern available, and the Tartan Kiwi listed one that’s $3.50 (US) as of this writing.

  1. Hi Becca,
Who even knew there was a Penguin Day?! A friend of mine adores them – he would probably like this mug rug . . . and he just bought his first home. Might be a fun new house gift with a mug/coffee/etc. So cute!
