Kathleen McMusing designed a North Star block for us that features a little piecing, a little paper piecing, and an interesting twist: piping!
- grays (Stardust Dark Gray Metallic and Gray Metallic, Sleep Tight collection, Cotton + Steel)
- black (Thicket by Gingiber, Moda Fabrics)
- gold (Glisten, Windham Fabrics)
I only chose four fabrics for my version and opted to use the background fabric for the triangles in the center block.
Now, don’t be intimidated by the paper piecing. These triangles are as simple as it gets. Sherry wrote a thorough tutorial on paper piecing that you can use as a starting point if you’re not sure about how to go about it. Even if you accidentally cut your fabric in the wrong direction, it should still be large enough to work on either template. The only exception is if you used a directional fabric, like my background. I did my best to get the dashes all straight, with mixed results. It’s close enough for me.
Making the piping is easy, too. Lay out the fabrics as shown below and clip or pin them in place. Stitch with a nice consistent ¼” seam and then press from the front of the block.
If you check the sizes of each square as you go along, piecing will be a cinch!
