I Wish You a Merry Quilt-A-Long–Block Ten

New to piecing with templates? Let’s shed a little light on the subject with this lovely lantern from Diane at Cwilt.

Merry QAL Block 10

I used:

Printing the Templates

When I first printed the templates, the bottom was cut off. If this happens to you, open the pdf file and look at the printer settings. There’s a little block marked “Print as Image” that should NOT be checked.

I decided to print the templates onto freezer paper using an inkjet printer. Here’s what to do:

Cut freezer paper into 8½ x 11″ pieces (or the appropriate size for your printer–I know outside the US, there are slightly different standards). Take a piece of regular printer paper–I used the old template papers that I printed wrong so I wouldn’t waste new paper–and iron it to one of your pieces of freezer paper. Adjust the settings on your printer for thicker paper and, making sure the freezer paper is turned to the correct side for printing (look for a little icon on your printer if you’re not sure!), manually feed each blank sheet through the printer.

If you’re using a fusible appliqué method for the lantern ring, snow, ribbon, and holly, now’s the time to add your fusible web to the backside of those pieces. Cut out your shapes (including the ¼” seam allowances) and you’re off to the races!
PLEASE NOTE: I do suggest that you include an additional ¼” seam allowance on the short outside edges of the background top right and top left pieces. I found that these two pieces came up a tiny bit small after piecing them to the lantern roof. Cut them a bit longer so you can trim the unit down to 12½” before piecing them.
I opted to skip using templates for the top and bottom background pieces. Instead, I cut two pieces of background fabric: one at 1½” x 12½”, and one at 2½” x 12½”.
Freezer paper can be reused a few times, so it’s possible to print one holly leaf template and use it for all three fabric leaves.

I also changed the direction of the snow (accidentally), so I moved the holly to the other side for balance.
