For the second mug rug of three patriotic designs, this American flag fabric was cut in the shape of a flip-flop (or thong, to some of you) and reminds me that US Memorial Day, which commemorates those who have died in military service, is also the unofficial start of the summer season.
You can create your own flip-flop mug rug by tracing a sandal or just a loose outline of your own foot, then applique a pair of straps and embellish as desired. If you like a curved bias binding, I think that would look great, or you can elect to use a knife-edge finish like Laurell did–here’s a nice tutorial about knife-edge finishes.
If you’ve been following along with Mug Rug Monday for a while, you might remember another flip-flop themed mug rug that I featured last year, or this mitten mug rug that used a similar concept. There are lots of ways to make this project your own!
