Text It Blog Hop

Text It book

Back in 2015 (I think), I found an adorable pattern for a coupon organizer from Rebecca Mae Designs that I used to make a couple of Christmas presents. The designer did a great job, and when I met Sherri Noel at Sew Pro the following year, I made sure to let her know (although she may not remember that). So when Sherri asked for help with the blog hop for her new book, Text It!, I knew that I wanted to participate because of the quality of her work.

I would have been happy to make ANY of the projects (I mean, really, have you SEEN some of the quilts and pillows that the other Text It! bloggers have been making?!??), but if you know me even a little bit, you know that the coffee wall hanging is a natural fit.

Text It! Life is Short
I was given an electronic copy of the book in exchange for my participation in this blog hop.

Sherri encouraged us to personalize our chosen Text It! projects, and some Simon & Garfunkel lyrics felt right to me.

Text It! Hello Darkness My Old Friend
The longer words seemed to call for a vertical orientation, and it was easy enough to make that change.
I used fusible appliqué for the cup and saucer…
Text It My Old Friend
…and a machine blanket stitch for the wool lettering.

Quilt It!

I free-motion quilted everything with a Bernina 550QE. Tiny pebbling fills the background (including in the little cutout sections of the letters). I quilted a swirl inside of the cup to represent the sweet sweet (actually dark and unsweetened) nectar of life sloshing inside and outlined some of the motifs in the saucer, but left the cup unquilted, thinking it would give the cup a bit of rounded fullness. That probably would work better with a bit of trapunto. Live and learn.

Supply It!

All of the cotton fabric came from my stash. I started with the Circle and Dots by Sandy Gervais for Moda in the cup, then chose fabrics that coordinated with that. The saucer is from the Nature Elements Collection by Art Gallery Fabrics, and the interior of the cup came from a scrap without any selvage on it. The background is Della Terra by Nancy Mink from Wilmington Prints. The backing and binding are both from the Awesome collection by Sandy Gervais for Moda. I ordered the wool felt from Twisted Notions on Amazon.

Buy It!

You can buy a signed copy directly from Sherri, or find an unsigned copy at Amazon, Martingale, Fat Quarter Shop, or many other retailers.

44 Replies to “Text It! Blog Hop and Giveaway

  1. Text It! is a delightful quilting application of what has become one of our favorite forms of communication. It would be wonderful to own a copy of this latest contribution to creative quilting. Thanks for the opportunity.

    1. Sherri’s book is terrific, and all of the projects have turned out great, haven’t they? Thanks so much–I thought the striped effect was really cool, too. The fabric I used for the binding and backing is nothing but squares!

  2. A favorite song given a whole new meaning – but for me it would be chocolate! Love your version.

  3. “Love You More” My daugher’s favorite comeback. She’d also love that purple background.

  4. I do remember! And I also remember your dresses 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing Becca! Love it!

    1. Oh, yay! Those dresses–I was SO nervous about the dresses. I made them and was terribly nervous that someone was going to call me out for poor craftsmanship. Of course, no one did. So polite.

Thanks for letting me join in, I’ve truly enjoyed the experience!

  5. I know it’s cliche but I’d like to do a yellow and white “You are my sunshine” quilt. I really like your wall hanging!

  6. I like your lyrics! One of my favorite old songs. The colors in this are great, too, especially that perfect binding.

I think if I made one of these, I’d probably use one of Mama’s many sayings – everyone’s Mama has/had them, so there are lots to choose. Thanks for sharing this book, it’s a great idea!

  7. Going with the coffee theme I would say “I Love You a Latte”! Your quilt turned out great. Thanks for sharing!

  8. You took me back in time with this one. The song will be in my head all day. I would maybe say Be Fearless or Failure is Not an Option for my young nieces.

  9. Love you to the moon ! for my granddaughter would be nice lyrics.
    Greetings from Germany
    Elke

  10. What wonderful quotes everyone has chosen! Great idea! Mine would be “Be yourself, everyone else is Taken”.

  11. Love everything about your wall hanging! So many messages to choose from, will take me a while to decide. From Texas.

  12. I like the idea of using a song lyric in a quilt, as you have … I have to think about this … thank you for the giveaway!

  13. I saw a project on the hop that said Create Every Day. I would like to make one like that.

  14. My piece would say “Honky Tonk Woman”! I’ve always loved that Rolling Stones song and it’s always been my ring tone on my cell phone. It just makes me happy!

  15. Your text choice was brilliant! My quilt would say, “It’s a lovely day today”, which was my mother’s favorite song; she sang it every day.
