“With Love at Christmas” is the name of this versatile block designed by Sola of Alice Samuel’s Quilt Co. I just know we’re going to see a lot of creative license with these pieced presents!

I Wish You a Merry QAL Block 8

I used:

I confess that I held off until practically the last minute to make this block. I will never, ever win a prize for accurate piecing, and getting the ribbons to match up looked pretty hard. But I loved the clean look of those pieced ribbons, so I gave it my best shot. Twice. I got pretty close, but even I couldn’t let the mismatched ribbons slide.

Sola has written in an option to appliqué just the top ribbon, but I decided to try an alternate-alternate method and appliqué all of the ribbon pieces to each pieced present.

I strongly encourage everyone to try the all-piecing method, but if you’re as impatient with a seam ripper as I am, here are the measurements I used to cut the pieces for each gift:I Wish You a Merry QAL Block 8

This eliminates a few of the steps from the original pattern.

Now for the ribbons. Be careful to cut the angles in the correct directions. (Ask me how many times I cut mine wrong! Okay, just once. But only because I checked obsessively after the first time.)

Place the edge of the front ribbon 1 3/8″ to the right of the side seam, then line up the narrower top ribbon based on that placement (parallel to the side seam). Line up the edge of the side ribbon 7/8″ to the left of the side seam, then line up the other top ribbon to match edges. I used a zig-zag stitch to raw-edge appliqué my ribbons. I may add a bow after quilting. We’ll see.I Wish You a Merry QAL Block 8After all that, stitching the second block went smoothly and I loved the look of the block after putting it all together.

  1. I just love your fabric selection and your appliquéd ribbons. Its funny how hard some of these seams can be. No one has suggested it so far, but sometimes a little glue helps – elmers washable – but I feel your pain. I commend you for figuring out the way to make it work for you and for our followers.
